Eventide Coffee: A Coastal Narrative Written in Light

Designed by Billboards, Eventide Coffee sits along Chennai’s East Coast, where light and shadow trace the passage of time across textured surfaces.

A new specialty coffee shop has taken root along Chennai's East Coast, in a neighbourhood where the sea is a constant companion and the light shapes the character of the day. Designed by Billboards, Eventide Coffee draws from this coastal context into the interior, allowing material and the space to respond to the shifting atmosphere of the site as the hours pass.
“It was about facilitating calm, something that felt natural to the place and its people,” says the architects.

Eventide Coffee: Chennai’s new seaside spot to pause
Conceived as a neighbourhood café, the project extends beyond architecture into a broader design approach, encompassing brand identity and spatial experience. The building reads as a quiet vessel, defined by a 6.7m height that allows the coastal air to feel present even within the walls. Its muted palette draws from the Madras coast, creating a sense of calm and envelopment.

At the heart of the plan, an off-elliptical counter anchors the space. A dedicated pour-over station introduces a slower, more intentional pace, drawing attention to the act of making coffee. Behind it, a curved wall carries a textured, graduated surface that moves from deeper earthy tones to lighter, washed-out hues, suggesting a gentle process of weathering.

“We wanted the materials to feel evolved naturally over time, inspired by the evening sun’s reflection,” as the architects note.

Light plays a defining role throughout the space. With exposure to both east and west, the interior is structured to register subtle shifts in daylight. A series of low-hanging beams extends across the ceiling, cutting incoming light into long, angled shadows that move gradually across the walls. Surfaces are left largely uninterrupted, allowing these shifting patterns to define the volume of the room.

Above the central counter, a skylight captures a softer evening light, diffusing it gently across the curved walls. A singular, slender blue lighting track arcs through the space like a horizon line, a detail that brings a note of modern precision within the otherwise raw palette.

The materiality remains restrained for Eventide Coffee, reinforcing a clear spatial reading. Textured walls, earthen tones and a muted palette draw from the coastal context. Surfaces appear worn in, holding a quiet consistency that allows the light to take precedence. The interior is read through these changes, where the material holds the light and the passage of time remains perceptible, turning a daily coffee ritual into an observant pause.
