Mischief in the Marais in Paris

At Mischief, ARTPILL turns dining into theatre in the Marais

In the heart of the Marais, where narrow Parisian streets often conceal the city’s most radical transformations, a former culinary laboratory has been reimagined as restaurant Mischief. Designed by French design studio ARTPILL, the compact venue is now an immersive dining room that places cooking firmly in view. Behind its terracotta-tiled façade, the interior unfolds as a carefully choreographed space, conceived as much for atmosphere as for flavour.

The project was sparked by a question after a visit to the theatre. The studio began asking how the ‘intensity and proximity’ of performance might be translated into a restaurant setting. The solution was architectural.

ARTPILL reworked the venue from the ground up, quite literally. Floors were excavated to gain additional ceiling height, an intervention the studio describes as ‘an essential element of the project’s identity.’ Walls, ceilings and circulation routes were entirely redesigned, volumes optimised and materials carefully selected to meet rigorous safety standards while retaining a soulful character. What was once a culinary laboratory is now an enveloping dining room with a heightened sense of drama.

Mischief is planned around its open kitchen, treated less as a back-of-house necessity but more as the heartbeat of the space. ‘It transforms culinary preparation into a living performance,’ the studio explains, ‘offering an intimate and immersive encounter with the art of gastronomy.’

Seating is oriented towards the chef, with the chair heights and counter distances tuned to keep guests close to the act of cooking.

The space is split between counter seats facing the kitchen and a quieter dining room. Warm, earthy terracotta tones wash across the interior, grounding the space in density and tactility. Rich textures and saturated hues are set against the cool precision of stainless steel, creating a subtle tension between rawness and refinement.

Soft ambient lighting tempers the industrial sheen of metal

Lighting at Mischief is both functional and scenographic. Soft ambient lighting tempers the industrial sheen of metal, while focused spotlights and LED strips accentuate the choreography within the kitchen. The lights were calibrated, the team notes, ‘ensuring optimal presentation of the dishes while avoiding flickering effects on videos captured by guests’, acknowledging how  contemporary dining is now watched and recorded in real time.

At Mischief, the atmosphere is driven by warmth and restraint, with a dining room wrapped in rust hues that hums with energy and quiet intensity, allowing the performance of cooking to shape the experience to create a welcoming, intimate mood.
