Step inside TANAT’s specialty coffee haven shaped by volcanic ash tiles and Parisian urban texture

Tucked away in the heart of the 2nd arrondissement, TANAT sits in a neighbourhood layered with old apartments, vintage shops and lively bistros. Framed by weathered façades and warm street lights, the café settles naturally into the skinny alley and its surroundings.

Designed by Paris-based studio Hypnos, the interior is through a deliberate use of linear elements. A gridded ceiling lightbox sets a soft, even tone. Elongated tiles and the geometrically patterned lighting fixtures echo the precise, step-by-step rhythm of coffee preparation.

The five-metre island bar anchors the space. Its stainless-steel countertop rests on a base clad with EXCINERE® tiles developed by Dzek in collaboration with Italian design studio Formafantasma.

Named after the Latin phrase ex cinere, meaning “from ash,” the tiles incorporate natural volcanic ash sourced from Mount Etna in Sicily, giving the surface a warm, mineral depth. The material introduces a warm, mineral depth, revealing subtle caramel tones and a tactile softness that balances the cooler quality of the steel.

Along one wall, a lightly plastered brick surface preserves the building’s original structure. Its irregular texture introduces a human touch that complements the more precise gestures within the room.
